At the Market

It’s midsummer, and the peak time to visit the market. These are the seasonal foods in central Ohio now, available from local farmers and gardeners: green and wax beans, zucchini and yellow summer squash, eggplant, beets, carrots, cucumbers, kale, Swiss chard, onions, sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, sweet corn, melons, peaches, cherries, tomatoes, garlic, and fresh herbs. You’ll also find meats and cheeses, baked goods, natural snacks and juices, jams and jellies, pickles, barbecue sauce, honey, granola, and more. See you at the market!

Siegrist Farms

Siegrist peachesMike and Cassie Siegrist have been involved with Coshocton Farmers’ Market since its beginning 15 years ago. Siegrist Farms includes 40 acres of orchards, producing peaches, apples, pears, plums, and sour cherries. They also grow tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, sweet corn, green beans, peppers (hot and bell), cucumbers, pumpkins, and Indian corn. In early summer, the Siegrists offer flower and vegetable seedlings, hanging baskets, patio tomatoes, and planters from their greenhouse. Specialties include baskets of pansies and dianthus, and small pots of morning glories, wave petunias, hollyhocks, and other flowers.

In addition to Coshocton Farmers’ Market, and a farmers’ market in Zanesville, the Siegrests sell at their own farm market in Adams Mills. Begun in 1979-80 by Mike’s sister, Jane, the market is open from late June until November. It features fruits from the Siegrist orchards, as well as other fresh fruits from the area, along with cheese, eggs, candy, apple butter, cookbooks, and canned foods.

The Siegrists accept WIC coupons at both the farmers’ market and the Adams Mills market. They encourage residents of Coshocton and surrounding areas to support local farmers, bakers, and crafters, which boosts our local economy.
