At the Market

It’s midsummer, and the peak time to visit the market. These are the seasonal foods in central Ohio now, available from local farmers and gardeners: green and wax beans, zucchini and yellow summer squash, eggplant, beets, carrots, cucumbers, kale, Swiss chard, onions, sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, sweet corn, melons, peaches, cherries, tomatoes, garlic, and fresh herbs. You’ll also find meats and cheeses, baked goods, natural snacks and juices, jams and jellies, pickles, barbecue sauce, honey, granola, and more. See you at the market!

The Honey Man

The Honey ManDick Mullet, affectionately known as “the honey man,” lives outside of Warsaw, Ohio, and presently maintains about 20 hives. Although fairly new to beekeeping, he is enthusiastic about and totally fascinated by his charges. His wife, Robin, readily admits she is the only woman in Coshocton County who has to put up with her husband’s “thousands of girlfriends.” This year he is also having fun advising an eleven-year-old girl in a local 4-H group who is interested in beekeeping.

Dick offers local honey that is filtered, but not pasteurized, so that the beneficial properties are kept intact. He sells several sizes of jarred honey. He also offers creamed honey, beeswax candles, and flavored honey sticks—a favorite with the kids. Dick enjoys meeting and talking with all the folks at the farmers’ market, and the Mullets encourage everyone to buy local whenever possible.
